About Video Boards With Computers

A video board contains a special processing unit which is called GPU (Graphical Processing Unit) or VPU (Video Processing Unit). This unit is responsible with some of the necessary calculations made for a computer to display images, the rest of the calculations being done by the processor of the computer (CPU). Every video board has an included memory which is used by the GPU. For instance, this internal memory is used for storing the textures of the surfaces encountered in games.

The video board is mounted on the main board in a special slot. This slot can be an AGP one, which is the most frequently encountered type or a PCI one, which is very rarely used nowadays. You can transfer data through the AGP port with speeds of 1X, 2X, 4X or 8X, but this doesn't mean that an 8X transfer is twice as fast as a 4X one. However, they are quite similar, the 8X version having a few advantages.

Many specialized companies manufacture video boards which they mount on different computers, but most of these boards have a graphic processor manufactured either by NVIDIA or by ATI. However, the best-known video board belongs to NVIDIA, which released the GeForce models with all its five versions. The graphic processors manufactured by NVIDIA have cores known as NV n, where n is a number. These processing units are differentiated by their core. The names of the cores do not define their performances because a NV 34 is not so highly performing as a NV 31 and it is a lot weaker than the NV 35 model.
